An Isle of Tile

The opportunity to own one’s own island in this country is almost unheard of, but in the Lowcountry, among all the unique slivers of land, there are a few dramatic plots surrounded entirely by water. One such property—of of Headquarters Island—is not only beautiful for its land-scape but, after an extensive remodel, it is also a vision on the inside.

After choosing an impressive selection of tile from Palmetto Tile Distributors for their new Folly Beach home, the homeowners tasked Palmetto Tile’s manager, Jason Goldberg, with revitalizing a wide range of spaces (including four bathrooms, one powder room, one pool restroom, one kitchen, and one pool) in their second home of of Headquarters Island. Together, they chose a mixture of materials and fnishes to add visual appeal to every surface.

“This house was renovated within the last year or two. Extensive work was done to the home. We feel very fortunate to be a part of such a nice project. The transformation is absolutely amazing,” said Jason.

Starting from the exterior, Palmetto provided natural, travertine pavers for the decking, which will nicely age with the home. Also, American, handmade glass-and-foil tile was chosen for the water line of the pool. “Throughout the day, with the sun moving overhead, the light refecting on the glass gives the tile a diferent color. We’re trying to show more examples of tile being used outdoors in the Lowcountry, especially since our climate is geared right toward it,” explained Jason.

Second only to the pool, the master bathroom is a true expression of tile creativity. The homeowners used a natural stone (with a unique mauve and gray veining) for the fooring and the shower wall. And, they used a dramatic, glass tile for an accent wall with double-glass pencil tiles to secure the two-way mirrors, behind which lies a fat-screen television. “The vanity wall in the master uses a glass mosaic from Senoma Tile Makers that is part of a hard glass collection made of recycled materials,” Jason described. “The homeowners chose to have the tile go all the way up the wall. But, if someone wanted to use it on a smaller scale, they could use eight to twelve sheets of it and get a nice efect.”

Always thinking of the average homeowner, Jason stocks not only luxe selections, but unique, afordable tile as well. Being a third generation tile provider, he has honed his inventory, selling high-quality and durable tile at three diferent South Carolina showrooms (Johns Island, North Charleston, and his father’s store in Columbia).

“We’re very customer-service oriented at Palmetto Tile,” Jason said. “We really strive to help the homeowner get what they want within their budget.”

For Jason, there is no greater proof that his customers are satisfed than working on not just one large, residential project for a homeowner, but two
